Adventure in Costa Rica

Updated: Feb 24, 2021

Costa Rica is an eco-tourist's dream and has become synonymous with an unspoiled tropical paradise. Legend has it that Costa Rice is known as the Pearl on the Caribbean Coast. Providing the best of both worlds, it is situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and within the Central American Region. Your next adventure getaway could consist of adventure, culture and/or wellness as Costa Rica is blessed with beaches, volcanoes, roaring rivers, and lush jungles. With a visit to Costa Rica, you will also enjoy the cultural blends authentic Caribbean and Latin American cultures.

Several flights arrive into Liberia daily from around the world, resulting in many luxury accommodation options for families. From the volcanoes, waterfalls, and bird watching, Liberia is full of diverse eco-adventure experiences. Simultaneously, it is famously known for its white water rafting its many rapids and zip-lining through the canopy tree-tops.

For off- the beaten path travellers, San Jose also sees many inbound flights per day. Nearby there is a small but vibrant town called Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. It is one of the dominant cultural centres for food and history. With its blends of spices from Jamaica and Panama, this region has beautiful beaches, a friendly atmosphere, and plenty of culture and historical heritage. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is world-renowned for its calm waters, becoming an ideal destination for surfing or snorkeling for both beginners and professionals. It is one of the few places in Costa Rica that isn't overrun with tourists and expats.

For travellers who want to be immersed in culture and give back the communities they travel through, grab your bubble of close friends and family and plan a private tour that will include the destinations and activities that you enjoy and want to experience, or join a small group tour with someone like G Adventures. The groups that G Adventures run are all small and average about 10 people per group per departure. Here are two great sample itineraries for someone who wants to hit the highlights and experience the best of Costa Rica:

The 13 day Active Adventure itinerary includes trekking, biking, horseback riding, biking, kayaking, and ziplining and is a thrill seekers dream! This is an active itinerary so a medium level of fitness is recommended. On this itinerary you will explore Monteverde and Arenal Volcano and raft the mighty Pacuare River before staying in a remote rainforest lodge. The journey is finished by heading to the beach at Pierto Viejo to experience the culture and natural beauty of the area.

The Natural Highlights of Costa Rica tour is a G Adventures National Geographic itinerary and is only 9 days in length. This itinerary is a light active itinerary so does not require much physical demand as some other itineraries. This itinerary begins in San Jose and takes you from the foot of an active volcano to the misty highlands of the Pacific Coast. You will learn from a National Geographic researcher at the G Adventures supported Monteverde Institute, join a local family and learn the art of tortilla-making, and seek out the country's most unique creatures while hiking through the forests.

With G Adventures and their love for community tourism, 100% of local expenses stay within the community to support local initiatives through the Planterra Foundation. To learn more about the Planterra Foundation, visit their website: https://planeterra.org/

Costa Rica's climate is defined by the rainy and dry seasons. The best time to visit will be during the dry season, December to April. The rainy season is May to November and the wettest months are September and October. The hottest months are March and April. Traveling during the dry season will be more expensive, but if you travel in the shoulder season and are OK with enjoying some tropical rain, you can stretch your dollar a lot further.

Whether you choose to stay in the Northern part of Costa Rica and enjoy its rich eco-tourism or in the south where aquatic adventure meets vibrance, Costa Rica is a destination worth visiting and great for solo, group, and multi-generational getaways, catering to everyone’s definition of a good time.
